Noorilim Estate
Nagambie, Victoria, Australia
In 1870 William Winter purchased Noorilim pre-emptive right from his father-in-law William Drayton Taylor. In 1879 William employed architect James Gall to design his new home. Gall designed a grand and well-proportioned Victorian Italianate boom-style two story mansion. Located on high ground close to the east bank of the Golburn River,
Noorilim is one of the most lavish and best-preserved country mansions ever constructed in Australia. The main entrance through the 60 ft tower enters a stately main hallway leading to a grand staircase and organ gallery where Dame Nelly Melba once sang! The mansion features Minton tiles, 15 fireplaces, 7 staircases, 10 bedrooms, an under ground living compartment and cellar . The estate is surrounded by 20 acres of botanical gardens and 75 acres of vineyards.
Noorilim Estate is quite possibly the largest privately owned botanical gardens in the country. The gardens contain over 300 established trees including 136 year-old Moreton Bay Figs, River Red Gums, Pines and English Elm to name a few.
‘Noorilim' is named after the local Ngurai-illum Aboriginal tribe and supposedly translates to 'many lagoons'. William lived at Noorilim until 1887. He then moved to Melbourne & built the second Noorilim mansion in Dandenong road. In 1890 William assumed his mothers surname to become William Irving Winter-Irving by Royal Letter.
